WINE GLASSES

The correct wine glass to pair with any specific type of wine doesn’t have to be a difficult process. Understanding which wine glass to select and how their designs enhance your wine drinking experience is easy to learn. There are many shapes of wine glasses and all are meant to improve your wine tasting experience but for ease, lets say most glasses fall into 4 types of glass use.

RED WINE GLASSES

Red wine glasses are easy to identify because their wide rim enhances the bouquet and flavor of red wines; only fill the glass 1/3 full so you can swirl and let wine breathe.

The 2 glasses used are for different types of reds broken down by how tannin the wine.

With robust, dark red wines a less tapered rim is preferred because it allows you to swirl the wine which will release subtle aromas and allow them to drift toward your nose effectively as you drink. Wine glasses with less tapered rims are typically taller which ensures the wine hits the back of your mouth  to maximize flavors.

For softer red wines, a glass is more tapered towards the rim. Often they have a larger rim and are shorter. This glass allows the wine to reach the front of your mouth which makes it easier to taste and identify more subtle, gentile flavors associated with softer red wines.

WHITE WINE GLASSES

White wine glasses can be distinguished from red wine glasses primarily by the rim. The glass has a lengthy U-shape and a more upright design. These glasses are used because white wines do not need to breathe as much as red wines. With the slimmer design, white wine glasses shouldn’t be filled more than 2/3 full allowing the flavors to be released.

White wine glasses have longer stems making it easier for you to hold the stem and slowing the amount of body heat transferred from your hand to the glass while drinking it, keeping the wine cooler for a longer period of time.

Younger white wines are usually crisper, so a glass with a slightly larger opening is preferred. This directs the wine to the tip and sides of your tongue which make it easier to taste the sweetness and crispness. The ideal glass for mature whites is taller so the wine moves to the back and sides of the tongue which make it easier to taste the bolder flavors and silkiness of the wines.

SPARKLING WINE GLASSES

The sparkling wine glass is commonly referred to as a “flute” or a “champagne flute”. This type of wine glass is used for all sparkling wines, not just for champagne.

With a long stem, the rim is very upright and narrow. This design is necessary so the area within the glass captures the carbonation which helps retain the flavor. Carbonation clings to the inside of the glass, which keeps the sparkling wine tasting like it should for the duration that you are sipping and allows you to appreciate the aroma of your bubbly.

DESSERT WINE GLASSES

Dessert wines are typically served after dinner. Dessert wines are sweet compared to other types of wines and often have a higher alcohol content. Keep servings to smaller amounts so it will not overwhelm your palate. As a result, the dessert wine glass will be much smaller than other types of wine glasses.

Additionally, dessert wines can come in all shapes and sizes. Common glasses for dessert wines are port glasses, sippers, and sherry glasses that help accentuate the rich aromas and sweet flavors.

Like white and sparkling wine glasses, the short and bigger diameter stem is designed for you to hold the glass in a way that does not transfer body heat from your hand to the dessert wine.

Collection of Wine Glasses

When looking to start a glass collection, choose a set of 4 for red and a set of 4 for white. From there, you can build out your collection as your palate and wines change.
