Wine is one of the oldest beverages known to mankind and is enjoyed around the world. However, the whole culture around winemaking, wine tasting, and wine drinking can be a little intimidating for the beginner. Fear not: we’ve got a few fun facts to make the whole experience go down smoothly.

The Grapes

wines

Technically grapes are berries since each forms from a single flower, but often grapes are referred to as “fruit.”

Archeologists have discovered the first grapes were grown in Eastern Europe around 65 million years ago and grape varieties enjoyed by us today are directly descended from these primordial fruits. Humans have been cultivating grapes for 8,000 years; which is before history began recording.
Romans are the first to call different grape varieties by different names.

There are more than 8,000 grape varieties known to exist today and  1,300 varieties are being used to make wine around the world.
The grapes you see at the supermarket are often called table grapes and have a thinner skin and way more seeds than the varieties used to make wine.
Vineyards cover about 7.5 million hectares (almost 18 million acres) across the globe, with the United States being the top grape growing country producing just over 966 million gallons in 2018. (latest information)

Color

wines

Purple or blue grapes make red wine.
When fermenting red wine,  winemakers usually include the skin and other parts of the fruit along with the wine juice, the wine will taste bolder and look darker.
White wines have a crisper, more fruity flavor made from green grapes. White wines usually have less alcohol and fewer calories than red wines. Doctors say drinking white wines keep lung tissues healthy.
Red wine is served in a wide rimmed glass. This allows the wine to breathe and mix with air as you drink and taste the complex flavors. Wines are not just red and white, some wines are golden, pink or even orange. This allows the

Region

wines

All regions where grapes grow are important factors how the wine turns out. Soil nutrients, amounts of sun, temperature changes and moisture, are factors deeply affecting a wine’s flavor.
Grapes grown in sandy soil often produce less acidic, “softer” wines. Clay soils produce wines with deep, bold flavors.
Wines grown in Loamy soils are less flavorful.
Grapes grown in warmer climates, (like Napa Valley)are usually more ripe when picked, making for sweeter wines.

Wine regions are throughout the U.S., but the states of California, Washington, and New York lead the country in wine production.
California is the fourth-largest wine producer in the world.

How to Taste

wines

The first stage of wine tasting is looking over the appearance of the wine, your eyes can give an idea of how the wine may taste. For reds, give the glass a quick swirl and hold it up to the light and notice the telltale “legs” that stream down the inside of the glass.the bolder varieties like Cabernet and Zinfandel have higher specific gravities and that is what it looks like. Usually the higher the specific gravity the better the wine.

The second stage of wine tasting is sniffing the aroma. Wine experts stick their noses deep into the glass to pick up the complex nuances. The first aromas to hit the nose are aspects of the grapes, while later aromas are connected to the winemaking process and how the wine aged.
Take a small sip of wine in order to get a good taste. Roll the wine around your mouth and note the different flavors. Purse your lips and inhale some air while the wine is in your mouth as it’s another good way to spread the more complex flavors through your sinuses.

Note: after you swallow a bit of wine, the aftertaste is different than when the wine first hit your tongue.
Let’s review; what did this wine taste like? Was it too acidic? Too sweet? Too alcoholic?
If you want, write down notes. Record the winery, the grape variety, the year, and your thoughts: that way, when you return to the same vintage later, you will know how your tastes have evolved, if at all.

Pairings

wines

Wine is famous for complimenting food, and different wines pair well with different meals. In very broad terms, white wines pair better with fish, poultry, and vegetables; reds go better with red meat.
Sparkling and dessert wines generally go best with sweet foods.
Fine-dining tradition calls for starting with lighter wines, like a Sauvignon Blanc, and then moving to heavier wines with bolder flavors throughout the course of the meal.
Follow these rules to tasting wines.

1.White wines served before reds.

2.Younger, less mature wines served before older vintages.

3.Dry wines served after sweeter ones.

4.Red wines served in wider glassware to support oxidation, which subtly supports flavor.

5.Serve white wines in taller, less rounded glass at 45-50 degrees F.

6.Serve red wines at 50-60 degrees F. (A good rule of thumb is to put a bottle of red wine into a refrigerator 20 minutes before opening.)

7.Serve sparkling wines at 43-50 F. Invest in a Champagne bucket, fill it with ice, and dunk the whole bottle in (don’t ever open a warm bottle of bubbly).
Whether you’re uncorking some expensive Champagne or sharing a decent red at a barbecue, these aforementioned facts will help you serve and enjoy that bottle. Wine sampling with a little know how is actually a whole lot of fun.
